Leadership & Management Development:  A Skills Workshop for Improving Leadership and Management Capabilities

This series of classes emphasizes three segments of development:

  1. Personality and emotional intelligence
  2. Leadership characteristics
  3. Leadership actions (The effective manifestation of knowledge & characteristics)

Personality & Emotional Intelligence

Our personality is the essence of who we are and how we appear to other people.  Personality determines the type of leader we are and how we use the leadership skills we possess.  Personality is reflected in the things we say, the way we feel, and the way we choose to lead our lives.  Personality styles differ with respect to expressiveness and extraversion, interpersonal warmth, approach toward work and people, as well as the elements that comprise our emotional intelligence including:

Self-awareness--knowing one's emotions, recognizing feelings as they occur, and discriminating between them.

Mood management--handling feelings so they're relevant to the current situation.

Self-motivation--"gathering up" one's feelings and directing oneself toward a goal, despite self-doubt, inertia, and impulsiveness.

Managing relationships--handling interpersonal interaction, conflict resolution, and negotiations.

Leadership Characteristics

The most important characteristics of leaders--the things most followers look for, admire, and would willingly follow--include:

  • Communication--The ability to listen and analyze
  • Leadership--The ability to define expectations, delegate, and empower
  • Adaptability--The ability to adjust and encourage creativity
  • Relationships--The ability to build consensus and create a positive environment
  • Task management--The ability to learn quickly and use time efficiently
  • Production--The ability to initiate action and overcome obstacles
  • Development of others--The ability to coach others and provide recognition
  • Personal development--The display of emotional intelligence and persistence

Leadership Actions

This is a skills-based workshop, not simply a seminar.  The characteristics above will be demonstrated and practiced through real-life scenarios, classroom supervision, and instructor feedback.
